Meet Laura: Your Guide to Costa Rica’s Wild Side
Laura’s path to Costa Rica wasn’t exactly straight, but looking back, every twist makes sense.
She grew up outside Washington, DC, went to Coastal Carolina University, and spent 15 years teaching before realizing she wanted to spend less time inside four walls and more time on the water.
That led to seven years running Glass Bottom Kayak Tours in the salt marshes of northern South Carolina, a business that grew to welcome over 5,000 paddlers a year through some of the most beautiful tidal ecosystems on the East Coast.
Those years taught her more than just how to run a kayak operation, but running a team of 15 guides was an experience.
She raised a son who’s now a Marine, which means she’s no stranger to letting go and trusting the process. And through all of it, she’s had her husband by her side and Gadget, her black lab, who’s logged more trail miles than most people ever will. A few years ago, Laura and her husband decided it was time for their own next chapter.
They moved to southern Costa Rica’s Golfo Dulce, where the rainforest spills right into the ocean and biodiversity hits levels that still surprise her daily, in fact, this region of Costa Rica is home to the highest concentration of biodiversity on Earth. It’s remote, it’s raw, and it’s exactly where she wants to be. Now Laura wants to share with you one of the most spectacular places on Earth.
She knows where the scarlet macaws nest, when the sea turtles are about to hatch, which beaches you can only reach by boat, and where to find dolphins on a calm morning, and her Spanish skills always come in handy when it’s time to negotiate buying essentials at the market.
She brings the same teaching instincts that worked in the classroom and the same guiding experience that built a thriving business back in South Carolina but here, the classroom is the jungle and the curriculum changes with the tides.This isn’t a career move. It’s the adventure she’s been building toward her whole life.
